Steel frames and external bearing bottom brackets

I'm building up an old steel frame into a general purpose commuting/hack/pub bike, and I was planning to use a HTII Deore crankset.
Obviously, this would involve a trip to the LBS to face the bottom bracket shell, but I'm not sure if that's necessarily wise given that would mean leaving the steel faces (relatively) exposed to the elements.
Am I worrying over nothing? Presumably painting the faces would defeat the point, so maybe just make sure they're well greased before installing the BB cups?
There are modern steel framed bikes using external bearing BBs, so I presume there's either a solution or it's a non-issue.

dont worry about it.
the tubes will be rusted through before you have bb problems."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
