hydraulic discs or mechanical discs

I was about to shell out £800 for the Scott Scale 60 2009 until someone told me that as they have got hydraulic brakes they will need bleeding every 5 mins. Is this true or just jealousy? Would be I better off getting a different machine with mechanical discs.
Also, never had discs before, always had calipers. Are discs pads a nightmare to adjust?
Thanks in advance!

It's total nonsense tbh, decent hydraulics don't need much tlc at all. It's like saying, "Oh, cables will get full of dirt and need replaced every 5 minutes"Uncompromising extremist0

Just got my first bike with discs, so they're a bit of a dark art to me at the moment. Could get interesting the first time I have to adjust them.0

Actually it's the other way around. Cable discs need regular adjustment, hydraulics in the main are self adjusting. They need bleeding once every 2 years or so but it's not a big deal.
Hydraulics over mechaniclas any day of the week for me. (don't see many top end bikes with mechanical discs, or any infact). It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
the mentioned someone is an idiot.
In fact they probably assume the microwave is witchcraft...0
