It seems a strange time to stop, no?

He had a difficult season last year, recovering from a melanoma, crashed in Qatar just after his birthday in the first race of the season, had a tough TdeF... I think with Maggy the mind was always willing but the body was increasingly saying no and he finally listened to his body.

Always good to see a big bloke making his mark in the peloton - hope he's happy in retirement and appreciates being able to ride his bike just for fun again

that's a shame...but still, a Paris Roubaix win and TDF stage must make it quite a bit easier to leave the sport...its more than most could dream of

Sad to hear its the end for him, he has had a tough few years.

Maybe he will give the comeback thing a go sometime.
  • At least we might here his commentary a bit more now.I've always enjoyed that,as much as watching him race.
Well done Magnus Backstedt.Enjoy the retirement.
  • I thought his Paris-Roubaix win was awesome, and in my opinion, up there with the greatest victories in the sport. Big riders (he's smaller than me) are not supposed to win.

Sad to see one of my favourite riders go, good luck to the big guy.
Would be great if he got into doing more commentary.

Was chuffed to get this photo and wish him luck in Glasgow last year.

Not to mention Brian Smith, who is doing the Tour of California alongside Harmon next week.
