Ok, having done some reading-up on this subject it's becoming apparent that I should perhaps apologise for saying I've got "saddle sores" when actually I'm just a bit "saddle sore". I wasn't aware of the subtle difference. Sorry if that's been confusing, although I'm still grateful for the answers as they're still relevant.

Well I hope you lot are happy with yourselves... After work I went out and bought a pair of Assos bib tights and some chamois cream. I'm not sure my brain has quite come to terms with the volume of money involved in the transaction but still... If it's as good as you say.

First commute in the Assos bib tights this morning and they're clearly much better made than my DHB Merston ones but it's too early to say whether they offer any more actual comfort in the long term. I did forget the chamois cream this morning, which probably doesn't help either.

My DHB Merstons have their first hole, and it's in such an odd place I guess I must have caught them on something rather than them wearing out. I guess I wouldn't mind trying some other (= more expensive) bib tights, but then again if I'm happy with the Merstons do I really want to put way more expensive thoughts into my head?

Yeah, my Merstons have a small hole on each thigh (probably from the sheer power of my skills ;) ) plus a seam unravelling already and they're only a couple of months old. Although I have been wearing that same pair every day for commuting so maybe it's to be expected, I dunno.

Certainly hoping the Assos go a lot longer than that before any similar problems.

You know you have come here to see if someone tells you it is okay to spend money on cycling kit - you know what answer you will get here.

I will temper it by telling you to get your darning needle out and repair the hole
Emerging from under a big black cloud. All help welcome

Hmm, could there be a correlation? *strokes beard*

Well even if these Assos prove to be better, there's no way I'm going to be able to afford more than one pair. So they better be able to handle five washes per week for the next few years.

Indeed. Sorry, was making assumptions. I just couldn't fathom getting kit washed and dried every week day  For commuting I went the multiple merston route (with no chafing problems, but everyone is different)

These are tights, right? Full length, with no pad, right?

The idea is to wear padded shorts under them. You shouldn't have to wash the tights every day...
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

  • I splashed out on some padded Assos F1 shorts last summer. I was horrified at how much money I'd spent until I went on my first long ride in them. At first they appear to be a harder pad than some other shorts, so less immediately comfortable, but they remain easy to wear for a very long time.

They do have a pad. They are Assos F1 Mille full length bib tights. Here's a link to them:
