Specialized chainstay protector

My stumpy came with a specialized velcro chainstay protector fitted as standard.
It looks good - but it seems to get in the way!
The velcro doesnt seem to keep the thing closed properly - so it starts to peel undone and then either catches on the front mech or rubs against the rear tyre depending on if it twists round the chainstay as it comes undone.
Does anyone else have the problem, or am I just unlucky?
I am contemplating changing it for just a strip of carbon fibre protector like I used to have on my old Saracen.
Where can I get one from?

could try a lizard skin jumbo one. thats what i got for my rockhopper."My life is like a porno-movie, without the sex".0

I think its the fact it is a bit chunky though - thinking something a bit thinner would be better?0

that jumbo one is nice and thin i thought, if thats what you meant?
you just want someone to talk you into buying abit of carbon bling"My life is like a porno-movie, without the sex".0 -
Ah ok - its the Jumbo bit that makes me think it would be chunky.
From the pic:

it looks very similar to my specialized one:

depends what your idea of chunky is.
mine is a couple of mm thick, as in 2mm"My life is like a porno-movie, without the sex".0 -
Yeah just checked the specs - spec is 3mm / ls one is 2mm.
I will try and take the spec one off and refit it tightly again, see if its any better.
If not will check out one of the LS ones, if not may look at the LS leather ones that just protect the top of the chainstay.0 -
good guess 2mm. i knew i had a talent"My life is like a porno-movie, without the sex".0

Wrap an old inner tube round the chainstay, and secure with a couple of zip ties. Gives better protection, and is free!Frank Yates0

yeah a bit of old rubber tied on with cable ties would probably be better than a bit of bling carbon, but it just looks shite"My life is like a porno-movie, without the sex".0

Did you use something to compare it against?
gcwebbyuk: Yeah, My FSR xc has the same style Spesh cover, I've found it starts to peel at the leading edge, catching on the tyre. Then the velcro doesnt fasten as well next time, so peels again. Also a nightmare to fit. I've found taking the back wheel off helps you get a tighter fit, but It's still not great. I'm tempted by the lizardskins one too, but I like the look of the spesh one  and we all know that's the single most important thing when picking bike components!Boardman Road Comp '08

If you've got a black bike, try getting some old cloth bar tape. Wrap it around, protects really well and looks fantastic, particularly on large stays. That's what I have on my silly little bike...0

Now that's an obvious thought I hadn't thought. The protector on my Stumpy fouls the rear tyre if I run anything bigger than 2.1s, as you guys have said it's the leading edge of the velcro that's the problem. Haven't had any problems with it coming off but it's not the easiest thing to fit. Do like the looks though.
Will give the cable tie idea ago, should stop it coming undone and squash it a bit so it doesn't foul the tyre. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
