I know there will be some out there who think this is a daft question but is there any reason why you can't use a hub gear (alfine, rohloff) in conjunction with a double chain ring up front.
If you had money to burn you could have a hammerschmidt up front and a rohloff out back.... would that work???

You would need some tension device that could take the difference in teeth of the two front rings.

No reason why not - the two sprockets remain the same size so as long as you have some method of compensating for wear, should be a winner!

  • I considered just this myself awhile back, upon realising the range isn't really enough for me, either too low or too high.

The Standard Alfine tensioner will allow for 12teeth on the front, so a 22/34 should work fine, I figured a 26/38 with a 21T ish on the rear gave me a better range, cause a 26T would suck less in the mud than a 22T mainly.

Just try to get the rear in the middle of the 2 front rings to there both off abit chain line wise, but not alot.
  • Ill add, I didn't bother in the end too much money and hassle and worries about power loss as I tried a Alfine on another bike and it felt very slow for no reason but the hub that I could see.
