Hi All,
I am looking for New (or preferably second hand - usually get a better deal) front bike light. I have been night riding for a few weeks now & am just using two standard princeton tec lights with AAA batteries and they are not cutting the mustard!!
Does anyone know of any good deals out there or any good sites that people sell bike lights on. Unforts I only have a budget of £50 (ish)
Any info much appreciated.
Thanks
Nige

An MTE SSC P7 torch? Strap it to you bars, and have a very bright lamp for peanuts.
Deal Extreme do them from about 25 quid. Will need some 18650 cells and a charger, but for 50 quid there is nothing anywhere near as bright!0 -

If you don't fancy a torch style light (not that tthere's anything worng with them - I use 2x tesco lights, they're just not to everyone's taste) how about a Hope Vision 1 for £62.99?

You need to buy batteries (4 AA) and a charger for them on top with the Hope. WHich is less than half the output of a P7 anyway!0

Heh nice to know the couple of months i left for the same old threads are still coming up.The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Dazza, don't suppose you have a spare tailcap for the MTE P7? I took mine apart and lost the bloody switch!0

Another vote for the P7s, I use 2 and they're basically as good as you need, and outperform a lot of expensive "proper" lights. But I seem to be a fanatic on this subjectThe prices are higher now than they were though because dealextreme sell in dollars, but still stunning value. They're not cheap lights, they're excellent lights that are also cheap.

Afraid not, try the candlepower forums im sure you can buy spare switches for most lights.
Then again with it being a dx light id imagine it would be much less hassle to just buy another one.The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

DIY lights, best way to go0

For the moment I have actually bodged it, but you have to unscrew a bit to turn it off! I used a coin and a QR skewer spring lol.0

I got the fenix tk11 and I love it, not as wide spread as the p7 but it throws far.
And it got most wanted or best value in the tests for mtb mag.
But seriously all you have to do is type in lights under commuting or buying and you will see thousands of recent threads.
sorry didnt realise you are new, and welcome.0 -

To be fair, that probably wouldn't have been the case if the P7 had been in the same test... Not to knock the fenix but from the comparisons we did the extra reach is slight, but it doesn't justify the loss of flood or brightness. Or cost for that matter. I wouldn't object at all to owning one but I don't think they're a good buy, personally.Uncompromising extremist0 -
I just got a fenix P3 and I t`s great. It`s also a quarter of the weight of the p7 and looks better quality to me.Smarter than the average bear.0
-
Well it is a third the output lol.0
-
Yes,if you believe the blurb.I can`t believe it`s 900 lumens or whatever they call it.Smarter than the average bear.0
-
600 is more like it. The P3 is 215.0
-
600 would be still be much brighter than any other light claims to be.How long do the batteries last?Smarter than the average bear.0
-
I have both fenix and the p7.
I agree that the fenix has the edge on quality - but the p7s amazing brightness more than makes up for it. Weight is not an issue here - i would say brightness is all important.0 -
Lots of lights claim more tbh. The P7 is capable of higher output, just not in these torches. Life on full power is about an hour before dimming.Uncompromising extremist0

Single cell on full whack is just over an hour. Other modes reduce accordingly.
These torches have been measured at between 500 and 700 lumens.0 -
That is bright.I haven`t seen anything that claims similar light that doesn`t cost hundreds of pounds.Heat must be a problem.Smarter than the average bear.0
-
They do get hot! But not searing, and on a bike are fine.
Most of these torches have a very wide flood. Here is a pic of mine:
The shed is about 25 feet away.0 -
I just read this
it certainly looks good for the money.http://www.mtbbritain.co.uk/mountain_bike_lights_review_led.htmlSmarter than the average bear.0 -
I was very happy with my fenix and probably would still be if i hadnt tried the p7. No point in having both lights on full at the same time - the p7 totally wipes out the other and the beam is so much wider too. Fantastic torch and amazing value.0

When i was testing materials to replace the front glass on one of my P7s after I broke it (I used a CD case in the end, incidentally) I tested the plastic for heat survival by running the torch at full power, at room temp in my house. Couldn't pick it up to turn it off, the casing was hot enough to burn- had to go get a gloveBut that's torture testing, warm ambients and no air circulation. On the trail they barely get warm to the touch.

I think you have a different fenix to me,yours is the LD 20 at 180 max.Mine is the p3D.Smarter than the average bear.0 -
True - but 35 lumens - the difference would be barely noticeable.
Say the P7 hits 600 lumens or so - thats a massive difference.0
