I'm building a utility bike with a 38 front and 11-34 rear block, any ideas where i should base my chainline on? Should i line it up with my most used gear?
Thanks

It's probably worth getting a dedicated single chainring. Normal ones have gates in to make it easy for the chain to come off, as David Millar found out in the tour the other year. The single ones also last twice as long as you can just fit them the other way round and wear them out all over again..

Had exactly that problem with mine, changed to this chainring in 36t http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=17741 and it's fantastic. Running 11-32 XT at the back on my 26" wheels, 11-23 on my 24" wheels, E-13 SRS at the front.
  • I've done similar and I just stuck the ring on where the inner chaining would go on a road double. This gives me a reasonable chainline to cover the entire block and the chain doesn't fall off either. Which is nice.
