Allo allo

Just taken delievery of my aerobars, break levers, and bar end shifters. Would ver much like to avoid the local shops £35 charge to swap the bars over for me. Can anyone direct me/ explain how to remove the gear cables from my Sora sti shifters. Or would it be worth while sending it to the shop to have it done?

Ta.

For the brake cables, disconnect them from the callipers, and the gear cable from the derailleurs. Pull the shifter lever back towards the drops, and push them to the side(like you were shifting) to get the tops as far forward as possible. You should now see the brake cable and where it attaches to the shifter (knob on the end, inserted into the lever mechanism. It's quite self explanatory once you get in there.

Edit: Just re-read and discovered you asked about gear cables, which I've never done. Oops!

Undo the cable at the mech, or cut the cable if putting new on. On the outside of the shifter there is a little cover which covers the hole you insert the cable through and take it out of.

Release brake cables from the brake end, gear cables from the mech end.
Remove the bartape and pull the cables away from the bars, pull loose from all cable guides, etc on the bike so that they're now just attached to the shifters.
Pull on the the outer cables and they should just pull away from the shifters.
Pull the brake lever on, i.e. opening up the shifter.
Push the brake inner cable through from the back of the shifter and you should see inside where it's being pushed out of the 'cable hanger' (the bar, no 4 in diagram above) which holds it inside the shifter.
On the righthand lever, work the gear lever into its top-gear position where it's not pulling on the cable, and pull the brake lever on, i.e. opening it up, now push the gear cable from the side of the shifter and you'll see it coming out of the hole on the inside of the shifter.
On the lefthand lever, press the inner lever to work it into on the little-ring position where it's not pulling on the cable and do the same.

Whatever you do, do not do like some fool had done with a pair of levers I bought second hand, i.e. cut the cables off where they enter the shifter and then work the shifter levers up and down through the gears - this meant there was about an inch of cut-off cable inside the shifter : the brakes were OK, but this inch of gear cable was stuck inside the mechanism and took me ages to free out with two tiny screwdrivers...
