I haven't seen any greengrocers in Manchester city center, just Tesco Metro, of they too expensive?

No idea, never shopped there. You won't find too many in city centres, I'd check out the yellow pages or smaller shopping roads. If you can't find a greengrocer, then the fruit and veg section of the local supermarket should still be cheaper than buying jars of food, and a lot tastier and healthier (with a bit of practice that is  ).
  • Sorry but Tuna and Cheese is just wrong!!

Substitute Tuna for some small homemade meatballs, my favourite and cheap as well.

But I have to buy veg then and it'll cost as much.

I might try making me own next time.
Will. Do this. Don't question it. Just do it. It will change your life.

Buy a copy of Home Cook by Alistair Hendy.

It teaches you how to cook proper food. It's easy and delicious. Women will be unable to resist you. Best cookery book ever.

have you tried worldwide supermarket? it's in rusholme just opposite from Edinburgh bike shop. You can get bags and bags of food from there for next to nothing. We go for spices but you can get everything - loads of fresh fruit and veg outside. They do massive flatbreads which are gorgeous. Go for a kebab in kebabish while you're over that way - absolutely fantastic.

...and just what do you think goes into ready made pasta sauce? I'll eat my metaphorical hat if you know what more than 30% of the ingredients actually are

    yehhhhhh!!

the kebabs are just big chunks of chicken or lamb, flame grilled (in view of everyone) and served with flat bread and salad and gorgeous chilli sauce & a yoghurt & mint sauce. We always get mixed grill - all identifiable pieces of meat, not a big rotating sausage sliced off with a chain saw!

Don't knock it until you've tried it (I think this may be my motto in life) 8)

Anyway Will - what you having for tea tonight? can you take a picture again? :)

This thread inspired me to have a tuna-pasta-mushroom-tomato concoction last night, and it was delicious. Thanks, Will!

Actually tonight I am going to make another pasta bake, I was looking on the internets and it comes to my attention you can use anything, even use soup.

    So I've got some things.

    Tin of Tomato Soup
    Tin of stir fry veg
    Tin of Tuna
    Mushrooms
    Sweetcorn.

I'm going to fry the mushrooms, stir fry and sweetcorn first, boil the pasta, then in the pan I'll add the soup, then the veg and all that.

    Should be good :)
  • Should be good

Can't see what's up with tuna and cheese? After turbo training, that's my favourite snack - one tin of tuna mixed with a few slices of cheddar. Lovely stuff! :)

Mmmmmmmm, the finest student cuisine. I'll tell you one thing that sounds disgusting, but is actually quite nice - pasta with bacon and kiwi fruit. The kiwi fruit is raw, by the way. I invented it myself.

Failing that, another student favourite of mine was baked beans and rice all scrambled into eggs. A bit bland, but full of energy. And it gives you the best flatulence you'll ever smell.

Scrambled eggs on toast is as good as student cuisine gets. Cheap as anything, and good for breakfast, dinner or tea :-)

    I ****** up :(

Gonna taste rank probably, aint gonna stop me eating it though it's packed full of energy that will do me for tomorrow.

I don't have any cheese so it cannot be classed as a pasta bake.

It has Tuna, Mushrooms, stirfry, Heinz cream of tomato soup in, not that I'll even be able to taste my fav part... the mushrooms.

How much would it cost me to make me a decent pasta bake to last me the day?, not including breakfast of course.

The jars of Homepride pasta sauce are between £1.50 and £3. I don't want to spend crap loads on food, less than a tenner a week really, the only things I need from the supermarket are milk, bread, butter, cheese, pasta and chocolate spread.

I reckon you could do it on less than a quid.

  • Try my own pasta sauce recipe:

Big blob of Tomato Puree (Sundried Italian)
    Small blob of Garlic Puree
    Pinch of Salt/Pepper
    Lump of Butter
    Sprinkle of Mixed Herbs
Milk (any will do), and as much as you want, according to thickness required.

Cook it before adding it to the pasta (duh!)

You'll see that my quantities are all so precise too. That's what gives it that unique taste.

Cheaper than any crap you'll get from a jar too!

I LOVE carbonara, would love to make that myself.

Why do you cook the sauce? Dont you just wack it in the pasta then put in oven??
