Spicing up the Tour of Qatar

I got so bored this evening watching it that I went out for a ride and missed the end!

There's miles and miles of sand, no podium girls and a lot of crosswinds. How can they spice it up for us, the viewing public?

I'll start the ball rolling by suggesting that they hire Osama Bin Laden to appear just in shot at some point and when you spot him you call in to win a prize...

  • make a scale model of the toulmalet and make them go up it 5 times every day.

also the last 20 to cross the finish get punched in the arm moderately hard.

Get yourself down to Wanchai...there're plenty of podium girls there, esp on Sunday

crosswinds are just as exciting as climbs ... possibly more so as team tactics come into play ... last years tour with cunego and valverde trying to play catch-up was brilliant ...

i'll admit the rest is dull as hell tho ...

Races are often there to promote regions, to help the tourist promotion but this race really puts you off ever visiting there. Plain sand, lots of wind, the occasional oil refinery or drilling plant, it's surely one of the most boring places in the world?

Funny thing is, PR and media companies doing content searches on t'internet will, within a couple of months, be quoting your use of the word 'Qatar' on a cycling forum as evidence of the exposure & effectively free advertising the event has brought, thus showing what a great success for the Kingdom it is and justifying ever-more brain-numbing sand-ridden sprinter-fests ad nauseum...

I've enjoyed the racing myself - nice bit of echeloning never did anyone any harm.

  • I suggest intermittent ramps with flaming hoops.

Currently, it's like watching a bunch of guys training on rollers on a sandy beach.

    Still better than F1.
  • Cavendish almost caught a final 'coup de bordure' of the day near the line - that was interesting?

Make them ride in the local regalia? 8)
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

Caught the end on Eurospoilsport highlights - Mr Dish was very lucky.

Dave_1 - you weren't in the Army over here, were you?
I live miles from Wanchai, so it's more convenient to get the wife to be my personal podium girl. (And it's cheaper).

I like the idea of local clothing - lycra burkhas would be excellent, though it might make David Harmon's job a bit harder...

  • To spice it up you could try to Sky+ / V+ the Eurosport coverage while at work.
It leaves you on a real cliffhanger when the recording stops just before the end of the stage… :x
    [happened to me yesterday]
  • We've had that a couple of time now this week - it's maddening! Never had this problem with Sky+ before - is it just with Eurosport?
