I was going to buy a Shimano XT Crankset today , guess what they have gone up from ? £146 to a ridiculous £205 !!! Thats over 40% !!!!!

well Mr Shimano I know prices have gone up for everything but you've just lost a sale to Race Face .
Maybe bikes aren't in Shimano's future company strategy ?

yes I realise that ,but don't we also want our local bike shop guys to stay in business ?
Please don't all go to the web traders .
What you going to do when something bbreaks and you don't have the knowhow /tools to fix it ??

Im not too sure this is all bad for the humble LBS. If the online retailers are going to be pushed up towards the RRP then the gap will fall bringing the LBS back into play. Also remember that an LBS may still have stock bought at the lower price that can be passed on when you go buy.

LOL if i buy something from my LBS they take about a week to order it, i then have to wait an eternity for them to get it in and pay a premium for the "convenience". If i order from CRC it's here basically next day and costs about half the price. Plus if i fit it myself, i soon learn the "know how".
  • and XTR cranksets have gone up to £430!
  • Merlin still have them at £99 and £114

Sorry I assumed wrongly that you were looking for the lowest price, as for the rest well I currently don't have a 'local' bike shop to support, unless you count Halfords (which I don't) and I've been building and fixing bikes for nearly 20 years so I don't need to visit a bike shop for know how or tools as I already know how and probably have the tools and if I don't Mr Internet is always willing to help me.

  • im pretty certain you never got banned for taking stuff back. i think its more likely you went in with a bad attitude and probably acted like a cock.

...ok, i actually went back, spoke to the miserable old guy whod sold my sister an inner tube for £5 (just a cheapy one) and a meter of gear cable which was actually 80cm, because she has no idea about bikes at all. I took the stuff back the next day, was perfectly reasonable. They said nothing, but the next time i went in, one of the chaps said i 'wasnt to be served'. Now the guys from the shop that i ride with were noticably surprised with this, as was I. havent been back since, but when ive seen the guys out riding, theyve all said it was out of order.

Bad attitude eh?? How about the fact i bought alot of stuff from there that i could have happily bought for a lot less on the internet?? Dont act all high and mighty at me, chappy

  • I now support my lbs (except for some impulse internet purchases like white bars and stem) because the price difference isn't too great and they tend to do me a better price than the internet does!
  • I'd support my most local one if they could get the bikes I wanted in. They're a hotwheels dealer so if it isn't gt, charge or mongoose i'm stuck. He's a lovely bloke in there now and the one previously was a friend of my grandparents and we'd always used him. As for the next most local one, they sold me the wrong size bike & were rude and quite nasty frankly when I took back a wheel which had buckled within 2 weeks of buying the bike, flat out refusing to sort it. Trip to trading standards later, i wouldn't touch them with a rusty blade again.

That leaves the ones in the city area which whilst between 15 and 25 miles away, at least have brands i want in and so forth, but i'll still use the one within a mile of home for repairs & stuff, just a shame they can't afford to run a bigger store with more selection.

Im with you on this one ride_whenever.

I do have to wait for stuff from my LBS if they dont have it, but unless the discounts are silly he will match or improve on internet prices. I also get invalueble advise on all things riding from the shop which unfortunatly doesnt come included in a box from CRC.

Its also very good to have the conveinance of an LBS if you need something fitted, or a part goes wrong in its warranty period.

  • I support my lbs a fair bit because they now let me use their workshop etc. if there's a free stand. In fact, they've just asked me to start covering on days they have staffing issues.
