Touring wheels on Campag hubs?

I am on the look out for a decent (durable but not heavyweight) set of touring wheels, built on to Campanolo 9 speed hubs. My Ribble winter/audax bike, which I intend to use for fairly light, B&B type touring is equipped with Mirage & Racing Triple components. The Mirage hubs on my current wheelset have been a disappointment as the bearings didn't last very well at all.
Can anyone reccomend either an off the shelf wheel set OR a good combination of hubs and rims, as well as a reccomended builder of the combo?
Obviously I do not want to pay a fortune, but do want a half decent set that will last. You get what you pay for in this life!
Many thanks for your suggestions.

Paul Hewitt. DRC ST19 or ST17 rims. If you are sticking with Campag, just go as far up the range as you can afford. My Veloce's are still fine after 4 years.
  • Thanks. I'll contact Paul Hewitt asap
  • I've got a Royce Titan, for heavier loads, hub with a Campag compatible rear Cassette carrier which comes in 130mm,135mm or 140mm,you can also swap the cassette carrier if ever needed to a Royce Shimano compatible one that fits the hub.Its is 3 years old and is still like new. If I do have a problem in the future I know I can return it to Royce for an overhaul. The wheel was built up by Harry Rowland Tel 01843 597443 and I discussed with him what I wanted the wheels for,my weight, loads etc etc to decide on the Spokes, rims.Harry ordered the Hub himself from Royce to save on double postage. It may cost you more Initally but in the maybe short to medium term you don't have the cost of your hubs needing to be replaced yet again and also the rebuild costs.I think the Royce hub will last me many years :D

+1 for Paul Hewitt, got them to build my touring back wheel Campag Record with Open Pro.

I'm taking my Tune hubs there later this year for a rebuild too.

Oh and please remember to click on my blog:

The more clicks I get the higher it creeps up the google radar :)
  • I had a '03 Campy Centaur on my touring bike when it was first built. I have chopped and changed things, but the first that went was my Centaur hub'd rear wheel. Had found the freehub body had split longitudinally.
Wanted to stick with Campy because I like the fact the cables are routed under the bar tape for use with a bar bag.
So the search was on for a really high quality, super-sturdy rear hub. Lots of manufacturers were out because they don't do Campy compatible freehubs (Chris King, Phil Wood).
There's a British manufacturer called Royce - they make beautiful bicycle components and are incredibly helpful on the phone. I bought the Titan (already mentioned below). I've crossed the Pyrenees coast to coast four times on this hub, and no problems. Expensive but fab piece of kit.
Laced up to DT Swiss 7.1 rims (have also been good).
The Royce hubs should last for years and years.
Alternatively, you can buy a little device from JTek engineering to allow you to use Campy components with any shimano wheel/sprocket combo
