Hi

I have been cycling now for about 6 months and everytime i go on rides (20 Miles) the area under my hanging baskets is sore for days after.
I have the saddle that came with my Scott scale.
is my saddle in the wrong position?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried adjusting the tilt?
What about using cycling shorts which have the insert in?

Or failing that, use a cushion

Saddles are a VERY personal thing - what might be good for one person may not be for another. I find a well padded saddle to be most uncomfortable and prefer a narrow saddle with minimal padding!!

The top of the saddle should be about level, perhaps with the nose tilted very slightly down to relieve pressure on the crown jewels.

Do you wear proper padded cycling shorts or a short liner/briefs? If not, you need to get some NOW! No ifs, no buts (no pun intended).

Personal hygiene is another big consideration - you need to keep your ricker as shiny as a new button! Try using some lanolin- or aloe-based moisturiser in affected areas too (Holland & Barrett Aloe Gel is excellent). DO NOT use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) - because it's oil-based it will dry the skin out and cause cracking and soreness.

  • might have jock itch. red itchy rash?

also padded under shorts if your not using them.

  • hi

i use padded shorts and a gel cover.

if its hurting under my baskets, does the nose need to be tilted down or up?

    Thanks

  • The stock saddle that came on my 08 Spark 30 - the 'Scott Racing' saddle - was awful. The most uncomfortable thing I've ever sat on. The one on your Scale appears to be the same according to Scott's website. Buy yourself a new one. I can recommend the WTB Rocket V Race for about 20 quid.

I find that when a saddle is tilted down it causes pain and when tilted up it causes numbness. A saddle should sit flat or close to flat.

(LOL - the Frankie Howerd in me is appreciating this thread)
  • if youre using padded shorts and gel cover then its your riding position. if the saddle is flat try tilting it back very slightly. I wouldnt advise tilting it forward, that will make you unstable and will feel extremely uncomfortable.

if this doesnt work, try one of those saddles with the bit cut out for the trumpet and skittles to rest in and not get bashed about all day.

if that doesnt work then consult a doctor. really.

if the saddle is flat try tilting it back very slightly.

Which will put undue pressure on your "old man and his saddle bags", possibly causing numbness and/or erectile disfunction.
if that doesnt work then consult a doctor. really.

And preferably one who knows what he's talking about when it comes to bicycle saddles. And I don't mean sniffing them outside the local convent school.

  • i always ride with the saddle tilted back (bmx hangover) and it hasnt caused me any problems at all. I can still get a stiffy although i do sometimes get a little numbness/pins and needles.

i do sometimes get a little numbness/pins and needles.

And you don't think this is a problem? Holy shit, if I was getting pins and needles in the old chap I'd be looking to get it sorted quicksmart!

How many hours did you spend sat on the saddle on your BMX on a typical ride? compare that to your mountain bike...

  • I'd lose the gel cover, i've found those things cause more trouble than they're worth.

set the saddle level wrt the part you sit on, rather than as an overall. Saddles with a rise to the nose i find need to be angled down so i'm sitting on a level part and the nose isn't pointing up .

As Stuey says, this is not good. It is not necessary to suffer for our art and for the sake of adjusting a couple of nuts (on the saddle), you can avoid all sorts of nasty conditions.
  • the numbness only occours once in a very long while and its usually after ive been ou riding all day.

i dont worry too much about it though. maybe I should.

I find my saddle feels best with a very slight downward tilt !

if your scott saddle is anything like the stock saddle on my speedster then i would bin it,.

mine was fine for a few months then it started crippling me, it used to give me pin and needels in the old chap and a numb tingling in the nads i tried tilting it this way that way but it still hurt, in the end i purchashed a new saddle this got rid of the problem, no more pins and needles in my purple headed warrior and no numbness of the nuttttttts...

like mentioned saddle choice is a very personal matter what works for one wont work for another so be bure to get one that best suits your size...
  • I agree, slight forward tilt. I used to get sore arse and pins and needles in me nuts. After a lot of fiddling (with the saddle) i found sliding it forwards and tilting slightly down at the front stopped all my woes. Also some saddles are just not suited to some people. I find the fizic ones with the wing flex system are great.
