Hi
I have currently got the below wheel/tyres that came with mt scott scale 60.

Wheels: Alex ACE-24 rims built on Shimano RM65 rear and Scott comp front hubs
Tyres: Scott OZON 26x2.0

I am looking to get new wheels that will take the 6 hole standard disc brake rotors.
I do XC/DH and a few small jumps (normal log / couple of foot jumps).

Please can anyone recommend any wheel sets or I have noticed that a few websites offer a 'Custom service' but i wouldnt know what was good or not.

Any help would be appreciated

Many Thanks

Nick

Merlin - XT hubs with Mavic XC717 rims for XC work or XM719 rims if you are more freeride.

+1 for the XT hubs on Mavic XC717 rims from Merlin.

Be careful doing DH and jumps on a scale, that is one light frame!
  • when i say DH, I mean long down hill trails etc.
No big jumps. 2 feet max.

I agree with the above, XT hubs, 717 rims, double butted spokes.

Mavic are the best, I have XM 317s on a hardtail and they are very good, they will handle the use you're describing fine :)

Depends what your budget is, for a cost/strength/weight balance I think it's hard to better the Specialized Roval Traveree's (Certini still have them in at £352). Just got some myself although I've not ridden on them yet :p If looking for something cheaper then the standard XT or Hope hubs on Mavic rims should be fine.
  • im guessing the xt / hope with mavic rims is a good weight strength combination and will be better than what i ahve at present but will allow for 6 hole rotors to be fitted?

Do guys on here have a preference of XT or hope?

    Thanks

  • another vote for xc717 on xt hubs. i would say go for the hope hubs if you can afford the, i used to have the xt/xc717 setup and it was suprisingly tough but the hubs needed fairly regular servicing and unless you are very good at it it doesnt keep them running much longer where as replacing bearings in the hope hubs should be really easy, oh and they look better to.
Ride it hard on a hardtail

I`d go 719`s, a little more forgiving if you land awkwardly and only a small weight penalty. If you can afford Hope`s, go with them. Not especially better than XT but nicer looking and interchangable to different size axels.
  • What about Sun Ringle Disc Jockey hubs as a half-way house between XT and Hope? Does anyone have any experience of them?
  • I'd stick with the above stuff, sort of!

I'd say 719 over the 717. A tougher rim for a small weight penalty and unless you're racing I'd take the slight hit in mass to be able to run slightly bigger tyres.

Get them from merlin on xt hubs, personally I prefer the hopes because of the cartidge bearings which aren't as smooth but you replace the races when you change the bearings, which is a big plus in my opinion.

Most of the wheel strength comes from the build, so a good wheelbuilder is a must, like above i recommend merlin.

If you want something inbetween hope and xt, try the halo supa drive rear hubs, not much cheaper, but an interesting ratchet mechanism for really nice pickup. For cheaper still try nuke proof. Not many people have tried them yet, but they are really well built pieces, really nicely made.
