Want to make the move to singlespeed for winter mud plugging on the local, very muddy trails, shortlisted these two but not sure which one i should go for, does anyone have any experience of either, reviews for the genesis are very good and i like it alot but it doesn't have rack mounts which are handy just incase and and the Inbred also has a built in derallier hanger so touring wouldn't be out of the question, but the frames never seem to be in stock (I would custom build the On One) Which one?

custom specs of the On one would be

Fork Surly 1x1
Wheels Front and rear Handbuilt Merlin Mavic XM113, Deore disc 6 bolt hubs
Tyres Continental Gravity and tubes 2.3
Single speed kit Surly Single speed kit and cogs
Chain Kmc 1/8th track chain
Handlebars Easton o/s Ea30 riser bar
Stem Giant 105mm o/s stem
Seatpost Easton ea30 seatpost 27.2mm black
Chainset Deore hollowtech 2 chainset, with granny ring only
Grips Cane creek dual ply grips
Brakes Avid bb7 160mm disk
Brake levers Avid speed dial 11
Brake cables Shimano XT brake cables
Spacers Brand x alloy headset spacers
Headset Cane creek S3 headset

total cost about £500-600 depending on what forks and what stuff like bars and s post i get off ebay!

any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

I take it you mean X117 rims? I'd get better than that, they are pretty poor uneyeletted budget things.

As for frame, can you get a test? Both are well made, well reviewed, similar tubing.
  • Yeah sorry correction Mavic X117 rims, they'll be ok for what i need, and they are eyeletted, or the ones i saw on google images were, thanks for the advice though

The genesis is well reviewed on this site.

I'd agree that an inbred needs better wheels than the 117s or 317s, but if you're that intent on building a mud plugger, why not buy something like an '08 Avalanche Disc and strip all the gears off and run a doofer? Then sell all the parts you've removed?
Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.

    Who are you calling inbred?
  • I'd like the steel frame, also i don't like the idea of a doofer or surly singulator etc. i like having horizontal dropouts to properly tension it. the whole point of ss for me is not extra stuff, like a mech or tensioner ideally. also mavic x317s i think will be fine for what i need i agree the x117 are a waste of time but x317s are fine i reckon. they're rims aren't they, double walled, eyeletted, what more?

  • Nice spec MTB Henry, very simular to my Inbred mines a 456 with 120mm forks. Stick to a steel frame I would never go back to an Aluminum - very unforgiving once you've ridden steel. On ones are cracking frames for the money.
