Is it broken ?

Went out for my daily training route which today was unsurprisingly snow covered. After about a mile I noticed that the chain appeared to be slipping and it did so on and off during the ride, a further 10 miles.

100yds from home and on a particularly steep final climb the pedals just spun and I ground to a halt.

The rear cassette just spins with the chain, there is no drive, I'm a user not a fixer so it's off to the LBS but what can I expect and which bits can I expect to be broken ?

It's a Rockrider 6.3 which up to now has been bulletproof and used daily for the last six months.

Thanks

sounds like water in the free hub that has frozen casing it to stop working.

    get it replaced.

I'd think its not completely dead - just frozen up. Does it work again if you leave the bike inside ?
  • I value my life too much to bring it in, wet and mucky cycle clothing each day has been enough to bring my wife to the point of poisoning (maybe that's how her cooking tastes).

If I brought the bike inside I may not see the morning but I'll try and heat it and see what happens.

Check it's not frozen first, there's been a couple of threads on this recently. If it has it indicates water's got in past the seals and it could probably do with a service or as JC suggests it might be past it's sell by date (but the way you describe it failing suggests freezing).
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
  • Cuppa, two sugars, slice 'o' cake, hot kettle, rear hub and drive has returned.

Anyone know how to get Madeira cake out of a chain ?

You're all fantastic, knowledge is power.

  • Mine went in dramatic style last autumn, pitching me straight over the bars in the process.
A new XT one cost around £30 supplied and fitted by my local Halfrauds.
