Overcoming

Funnily enough I watched this again atthe weekend for the first time in a couple of years. Jaksche, Basso, Bartoli all in the bad books now but it's still a pretty good watch.
Jens and Piil are just a great double act in those early stages and the level of access allowed to the team is quite rare (though no doubt vetted by Riis and Brian Namgaard or whatever the PR guy is called). Bjarne Riis comes across as slightly more human than he would normally haveyou believe and Ole the physio is the real star. If only I could get him to look at my dodgy knee.....0 -
I like the look of utter surprise when Riis is accused of doping in his team, ...how dare they suggest Riis was not as pure as the driven snow.
The real undertone of the TDF coverage was how "the general" controlled everything. Basso was gifted a win, and Basso slacked off on Alp D-huez, as per instructions. You can see how BR realizes he's not in control of his star rider, Armstrong is.
The film was not very good when it came out, but now in the context of a few confessions and convictions, it actually gets better.
The DVD is worth it just for the short segment on Voigt.
As for Ole...at one point he treats team stress with herbal eye drops.0 -
I like it in some ways...but mystifies...pure propagana...mystifies, keeps us under the illusion that it is only talent that gets one into the pro ranks at that level when it is 5 different doping methods allied with some talent and dedication...in that respect I despise the piece of propganda Overcoming was and is...but still interesting. Can see why blijlevens punched Julich-nice one Jeroen...Riis speaks like a shady character...quiet and contrived0

Its worth a watch but not worth buying..0 -
Just finished watching it myself, most of it I found boring, plus it was subtitled, still, worth watching ....... once :shock:Cycling never gets any easier, you just go faster - Greg LeMond0
-
It looks like a load of rough cuts footage all jumbled together, needs editing to about half its original length before it would make any coherent sense or tell any kind of story.
The sound quality is awful in places - the subtitles necessary even when they're speaking English.
Although sometimes the subtitling is poor too though - like when calling for 'more bidance' (bidons
 )
All in all, I found it very disappointing.
Particularly as at the same time I bought Hollentour (Hell on Wheels ?) about T-mobile/Zabel&Altag - I couldn't get the English version so bought the original German one, but even so most of it's in English and by contrast it's suuuucchh a better film.0 -
I've just watched it again, and reconfirmed that Jens Voigt is my favourite rider ...

I need a coffeeeeeeeee!Le Blaireau (1)0
-
Voigt:
"uh. I have mal de gamba."
"I need stronger coffee, because stronger is better"
"when you enter a hotel room, check the TV for German channels. Ah, German channels,... life is good."
The film debuted at the Toronto film Festival, and was panned. They re-edited it, and it managed to make less sense.
(for example, no mention of the pool scenes with Basso: he didn't know how to swim.)
I like the scene with Julich screaming about his crappy mechanics, and then his bike falls off the car.
The good bike documentary has yet to be made. The worst one has been made, "Cobbles, Baby", the documentary of an idiot flying over to Paris Roubaix, only to be frustrated at how the people of France speak French.0 -
Hoellentour isn't bad. A Sunday In Hell is pretty good, but does drag quite a bit in places. Road To Roubiax - there's a good film in there, but it doesn't quite manage to get out.Le Blaireau (1)0

Hell on Wheels is pretty good0

Hell on wheels likewise rings hollow...remember Zabel saying how he could never repay his EPOd up mate for all the domestique work he did? ...you'd at least think Zabel would have injected the same shite into his veins that Rolf A did to do his job for Zabel? Imagine havign your best mate dope to get you wins and you not doping yourself...and of course roomates for years...and Eric Z knew nothing, never touched EPO. Hell on Wheels is Liars on Wheels
edit-I see Zabel rode his last race a week ago...this retirment has now gone on for 6 months, piss off Eric!!0 -

Hollentour is pretty good, I like Overcoming but as others have said it is a bit disjointed. At Christmas I bought Road to Roubaix and was a bit disappointed with it as it seems to drag on a bit and isn't that well edited.0

I liked the bit when Sastre and Piil are talking about interviewing George Hincapie and thrusting the microphone into his mouth and calling him 'Lance'. Very funny, and it made Sastre's Tour victory even sweeter.0
