Bristol - secondhand bikes..

Hi,

Wasn't sure where to post this, but my aim is commuting, so this seemed like the place.

Does anyone know of anywhere in Bristol that sells secondhand bikes? I'm looking for a town bike that I won't be concerned about getting stolen etc. I could obviously look on eBay and free ads etc, but just wondered, given how popular cycling seems to be in Bristol (I've just moved here) if there was somewhere else to look.

Thanks!

I would have thought 'The bike workshop' would be your best bet. It's opposite zero degrees.

Bool's Cycles in Fishponds seems like a good bet.

I've never been here, but it looks quite good for second hand
    "Impressive break"

    "Thanks...

    ...I can taste blood"
  • Thanks folks, some useful suggestions there.

That Jake guy is insane! Hilary Stone (down in Easton and on Ebay) usually has some good stuff - ebay name: hilarystone.

Bristol is great for cycling - apart from Bridge Valley Roa and Park Street....try doing them on a fixed: so far I have managed both with a 78 inch gear, fecking died afterwards though.

Try the little bike shop on Gloucester Road opposite The Old Fox pub.

    Welcome to Brizzle.....!
  • for cheaper go to montpelier find picton street, go to the back down picton lane(it says closed coz of the buliding works but you can still go down), find this yard with a peugoet 406 in it and some bikes. there is this dude there called shaun, he is bonkers, but he has 100's of bikes for sale, all of very varying sorts, be prepard to sift thru junk (the good bikes are at the back of teh workshop), but there is some stuff there that may suit your needs. Its a bit untody but there is tons of bikes, he repairs bikes too. he is open thurs, fri and sat, let me know how you get on, note he is a bit of an eccentric.

  • Thanks, I've got a wealth of ideas to explore there...Shaun sounds worth a visit just for the hell of it!

On a similar note, and I'll be googling this as well, but are there any good sociable cycling clubs around? My ideal would be youngish people (I'm early 30s) who go out for a blast of ride at the weekend followed by a few beers somewhere.

    Thanks again.
  • Hey went to quite a few bike shops today and I just thought I'd post my research to save anyone else in my position the trouble in the future.

    Shops I visited:

(Sorry I didn't take note of any of the names lol) Shop at the end of Elton Rd - didn't have any used bikes but did have a good mountain bike going for £100

Shop at the bottom of Park Street - didn't have any used bikes, all new bikes were completely out of my price range i.e. £300+

Bikeworkshop (at the bottom of the christmas steps, NOT opposite Zero degrees but NEAR it.) - the owner told me second hand bikes under £100 get snapped up instantly and he has 100ppl every day asking for them. He only had some used but mostly new above £100.

I coldn't find Jake's bikes but did find another one further up either on Stokes Croft or Cheltenham - had a few decent used bikes, some hybrid some mountain, cheapest was a mountain bike going for £95 but I did spot a few specks of rust.

Decided not to go to Bool's Bicycles (too far away) but did go to the place opposite The Old Fox pub on Gloucester Rd - cheapest place I found managed to get a brand new mountain bike with front and rear suspension for £69. Also the guy told me that he only had a second hand hybrid in stock that day but he often sells second hand bikes for as low as £40.

Hope that was of use to anyone out there who simply googled second hand bike stores like me :)

Looking at the location of Jakes Bikes, it is now my LBS being less than 100yds from this keyboard. To those needing the finer details it is in the old Lloyds Bowmaker building on Stokes Croft on the lights at the end of Jamaica Street. HTH
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Jake's is by appointment only, so call first- it is really hard to find, no signs or anything... apparently you have to buzz in. I looked for the place today but couldn't find it, and I was around the entire perimeter of the Hamilton House!

I visited Sean on Picton Lane, who seems like a decent fellow... lots of bikes. My son's bike got nicked and we are looking for another. He found one that suited him and Sean told me to come back Thursday to get it, after he replaces a wheel, seat, cables and adjusts the gears and brakes. I will post an update then! He tells me it will cost 50-80 quid.

I was a bit confused, though- he tells me that canti brakes are better than V-brakes but I understood it to be the other way around...
