A what commute bike...

Ok you lot...I need help.

I've got a budget of £400 for a new commute only bike*.

*Although I could go up to £500 although it'll cost me a lot of cooking as way of bribing Mrs Hondafanatic.

I currently use a MTB that's got too much good kit that's getting ruined by the road salt etc etc, so I'm totally open to any ideas for a bike.

My journey is a 10 miles round trip. 3 miles straight into town down the A6, so speed is important...however, the journey home is 7 miles along the canal path which is slippy and rough in parts.

Therefore, dedicated road bikes are out as my mate tried this on his carbon jobbie and needed new fillings after two days.

I'm looking for low maintenance, e.g.. I don't need disc brakes as they get clogged up. I don't need a massive range of gears, I never really drop off the big ring unless it's a full on head wind (I'll STFU and MTFU at this point)...so would a single gear be an option???????

I don't want a fixie...in the words of Roy Walker;

"It's good, but it's not right"

So, the brief...

£500
Low maintenance
Fast and light
Can handle rough and muddy paths
Perhaps some mud guards and panniers compatibility
Slightly left field

And remember; "You can't win if you don't buzz in!"

Ta muchly
David

Also, I have calculated my FCN as 12...although I have no idea what that actually means.

It's surely gotta be the Specialized Tricross single speed.

If I hadn't just spent a fortune rebuilding my old Trek 6000 as a commuting only bike then that's what I'd get.

Evans have still got some of the 2008 models for £399.

Sadly, you missed the Pearsons offer. They were knocking them out at only £275 with some really cheap upgrade options on tyres etc.

Yep Tricross Single. My boss has just bought one, decent bit of kit for the money.
  • Ok...i'm going to order one...which size?

    I'm 5 foot 7 but only 31 inch leg...so I'm thinking 52cm frame would be fine?

Anyone got a good size guide?

The Boardman urban hybrids might be worth a look with the discounts, even though they are disc brakes?
