PMs sitting in Outbox ?

Sent a couple pf PMs today, but when I check if they have been sent, they are both sitting in my Outbox, not in the 'Sent' folder as I would expect.
Have I done something wrong?
Have they gone anyway?
Help!!

Messages stay in the outbox until they have been opened by the recipient

I've always assumed that it is because they have not been read by the recipient yet.
