Personally I ride my bike, I don't "train" as to me the term training insinuates there is a goal whatever it may be. I ride to keep fit and hopefully get a bit fitter. What's your deffinition of training/riding, which do you do?

    I do both.

I agree that training is with goals in mind. I do have goals for this year such as the Cheshire Cat and the Fred Whitton Challenge, so you could say that all my rides are aiding my preparation for these, and so are all training.
However, I see it that my 30-40 mile midweek rides on a day when I'm not commuting by bike are just rides. I don't have any particular aim, I just fancy riding around for a while, looking at things, investigating new routes etc.
My weekend rides are definitely training. I'll set myself a goal to hit, such as riding 100km, doing 80km in under 3 hours, etc.
I also commute by bike, which doesn't really fit into either category, it's just the best way of getting to university. However, as it's 17 miles and I can never be bothered to get out of bed, it generally ends up being pretty good training as I have to push the whole way.

It's a fine line. When I do 60+ miles on my road bike I figure I am training because the pleasure aspect is diminished towards the end. What am I training for ? Maybe just to make it easier next time.

I took my bike on a train once. Does that count?
