Childseat + Luggage, any recomendations....?

Hi All, it's my first post so please go easy on me!

Ok, so I bought a Co-Pilot Limo without too much research... they seemed popular etc. At the time I didn't really think that someone would design a childseat which had no options to take luggage. I was wrong. This childseat slots directly onto the rack completely removing any possibility of carrying luggage. It also doesn't seem to have any line of luggage accessories, and the special rack it uses will not go on a bike with disc brakes.

My bike was stolen last week so currently looking for a new commuter. It's going to have to go offroad to so front suspension (i.e. no front panier) and disc brakes front and rear.

So, my question is, what childseat can I get which will enable me to commute to work with my son on the back?

So far I've looked at using a rack and a child seat which bolts onto the seat tube, but neither myself of my LBS are sure that this is all going to fit.

Any suggestions?

  • We have a hamax siesta which fits on my mtb a connondale F5. The seat attaches to a bracket attached to the upright. Have a look at the hamax website. The only problem we had was due to the length of the upright we had to buy an additional bracket for the seat. Depending on how old your child is what about a tag along?

By tag along I assume you mean a trailing type bike? Unfortunately we go along fairly busy (by Scottish standards) A roads so I'd rather the bike had no unusual extremities / low down trailers for other road users to get "confused" by. I would not put it past an over enthusiastic driver to watch me sail past and pull out close/tight behind me without noticing a trailing bike with kid on. I just shudder at the thought.

    My current commute luggage includes:
change of clothes, wash kit, waterproof jacket (which is a bit bulky)
    laptop computer
    notepad
    childs spare clothes for nursery
    and other misc stuff.

It normally can pack into one panier and a rucksack, but the rucksack is too close to Jack's head when he is in the CoPilot Limo.

I did look at the Hamax Discover, a front seat which leave the rear rack free for luggage, but I'm just not sure that this is going to leave me as in control of the bike as I would like.

  • Oh! Found something!

Hamax Plus. Seems to be stuck away on their website. Don't know how I've not managed to find this before.

Ok then, anyone used this before, got any recommendations?

And if anyone is interested, I now most likely will be getting rid of my CoPilot Limo, so PM me and make me an offer.

We ride with a Co-pilot limo, and have always carried luggage on lowrider front panniers. I believe you can get front racks for use with suspension.

Take a look at http://www.oldmanmountain.com/ for possible options with front racks.

  • Ian> Thanks for the link. I've seen Old Man Mountain stuff before, but I guess it never really occurred to me that they were doing panier racks for suspension forks. How do you find the handling when using front panniers? Do you ever cycle without the child in the seat and the front panniers loaded? 50% of my commute would be in this configuration.

I have to say that I am a little reluctant to pay £88 for a rack

    Can you borrow a trailer?

You would be surprised how much more respect and clearance child trailers get from passing drivers.

We used a Burley with a dynamo rear light upgraded to 3 watt.

However you need to try one to make up you own mind..........

  • I have heard good things from people who use WeeRide and IBert front child bike seats.

Complete rip-off if GBP88 is correct, when they the Ulimate Lowrider sells for US$100. I ordered mine direct from OMM (I'm in New Zealand) and it came within a couple of weeks and postage wan't too expensive.

Although handling is somewhat strange - it's all right, just different from normal - I have cycled without child, but with luggage.

    It's one option to consider.
