SPD SL/Sidi cleat position

I've just ditched my old Look Deltas for some Shimano SPD SLs.
The problem I'm experiencing is that I don't seem to be able to get the new cleats to fit far enough back on my Sidi Hi Tech Carbons.
The Looks were always set towards the end of their adjustment, and with even with the Shimano cleat jammed right back, I don't feel like I've got the ball of my foot the right side of the axle.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem and which brands of shoe allow for a more rearward mounted cleat position with SPD SL cleats?
I'd take a guess at Specialized, but I'd rather not go on guesswork.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
