SKS Shockboard works very well, it's very effective at stopping any splash back onto the face or otherwise, including steep, wet, cow censored ridden, road descenting at speed with knobbly tyres on. Not too over the top visually either.
This http://www.rapidracerproducts.com/NeoGuard.htm is what I have, it works great and looks totally less gay than a moto-style one Alternatively you could cut up an old inner tube to achieve the same thing, ghetto style.
Except they don't work if you need to do any filthy and wet road descending. The farthest part (from you when riding) of wheel and knobbly tyres will flick shite up and go straight up and over and into your face - not a problem 9/10 but if you wear specs or don't need the distraction on roads then something like the Shockboard is a better option, or so I've found.
Depends where you live, where you ride. Horses for courses.
Those guard things are great, as long as you only ride in a straight line. Once your wheel turns then all the censored gets thrown up into your face. Moto style guards stop that happening, because they turn with the wheel. If you ride in wet and mud the moto style are the best. If you ride trail centres then anything, or nothing is good enough.
The neoguards turn with the wheel too, they're fork mounted. Combined with a crud or similiar tube guard, they're very effective.
But I still love my SKS shockboard, it's incredibly effective, very light, and not too visually horrendous. Most moto-style guards are just far too big for the job.

I use a Neoguard that stops most but on the berms at Whinlatter I ended up with mud up my nostrils
