How compatible are Shimano, Campag and Sram?

Could I for instance have campag drivetrain with shimano sti brake levers?

Or is it best to have levers and mechs by the same manufacturer??

ohh and should a cassette also be by the same manufacturer / product type??

    The general rule is that the cassette and shifters should match, although SRAM and Shimano cassettes have the same spacing so can be swapped. However, some people do run the "wrong" cassettes without too many problems.

    Best treated as incompatible unless you know what you are doing. There are numerous bodges, some better than others.
