edited January 2009 in Commuting chat
Went to see the physio yesterday, a nice Danish chap, and explained to him that I cycle everywhere, and he said this:
Well I think that next week you can get back on your bike, as long as you use a light gear and pedal with your heels not your toes...

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! :D

Clearly the heel-pedalling is a bit lame, but I WILL BE BACK ON A BIKE!

It will probably be the old commuter, as it has flats on it already and has a light gear, unless I get the rubbish roadie down to London...

I think heel-pedalling will be easier on the old commuter...

:D:D:D:D:D

That's great news BUT what will you do when someone scalps you
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

Honestly, I'll be so happy to be back on the bike that I won't care.

And I know I'll scalp them the hell back when I'm fighting fit... :D
  • And there was me thinking that *this* time it would be

    "I'm pregnant"

Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

    Bike 2-A

I'm still at the stage where the idea of having a tiny person growing in my abdomen is about as appealing as having a tapeworm.

    Ugh.
  • why use flats? just glue your cleats to the heels of your shoes.

or turn your shoes around so the cleats are at the back

I presume you can pedal normally on your good leg and heal pedal on your bad? Saddle height might need to be lowered to make it comfortable to pedal with your heal.

I want to see a one legged scalping!
Short hairy legged roadie FCN 4 or 5 in my baggies.

I nearly suggested moving yer foot further forward on the pedals the other day but kept quiet for fear of being tarred and feathered for it. Bad technique n'all that.

Now, is it possible to heel pedal up Dark Hill?
  • Yeah, I was thinking about that - better to pedal on the bad heel and normally on the left leg, or better to be even and pedal with the heel on both sides?

I'm leaning towards the latter, but feel free to let me have your opinions!

Top news. Let's hope the heel pedalling, slow moving, easy gear thing doesn't have to be endured for too long.

You need some more equipment to complete the look, LiT:

    a full-suspension "MTB" from Halfords

    some very baggy tracksuit trousers

    an mp3 player

    no road sense

    a hoody

    job done
Emerging from under a big black cloud. All help welcome

Won't the stiletto heal get caught in the pedal?
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Great news!
and I personally think that both on heels would be better. But I don't know the most so going on purely a balance angle of it.

Not quite. Job done only when the seat post has been lowered to the extent that it's barely visible. Which of course means there's no way to attach a rear light.

Those of us in London you have the chance of a lifetime. SCALP LiTS, if you see a blonde on a red cruiser style bike, go for it and brag about it on BR. You won't get anothert opportunity

Glad to know you're back on the bike :D

  • I thought it wasn't a scalp if you're on, say, a road bike and LiT is on a cruiser?! I am currently pedalling the winter hybrid around with immunity from all the roadie scalpings.

All the best for a speedy recovery LiT.
  • Yeah! Too right! Ha! I am unscalpable...

    ;)

Just managed to drive back to Essex. Pretty sketchy... having no power pushing down with the toes of your right foot is not great for driving. Fortunately there's a lot of space around my pedals!

    Left foot braking.

After all this time its good to hear you are turning it around, however I am going to be the bore bag/voice of reality call it whatever

[1] Tape worm/baby you will eat the same
[2] Give the injury another week - don't relapse and make it worse.

I know you want to get back on the bike and yes the ankle needs exercise, just think the unthinkable and give it another week.

Other than that I'll get off your case......Good luck

Tried that, nearly crashed... left foot a lot stronger than right foot it seems, and also used to pushing the clutch which has a lot more travel in it. Further experiments may follow, but not ont he A406 this time.

DD, thanks for your concern, I am trying not to push my luck!
