Conditioning Advice

Hi All
I use my Bianchi Carmeleonte Alfine to commute a 14mile round trip with steep grades Monday to Friday and the occasional short trip out at weekends. What I would now like to do is to get in peak physical shape in order to get the fastest times for my commute and to become better at doing longer distances should i wish to go out on a weekend. I just wondered if any body has any advice on what the best things to eat are, if there are other exercises that help etc etc.
To confuse matters slightly I am insulin dependent diabetic and I have noticed that slight changes in blood sugars can really affect my commuting performance, some days I can really rip it up and do 6 miles in around 30 mins (may not be impressive but for me it is, and i go up a couple of miles of steep hills). Therefore I cant really take many stimulants or proteins that may help performance due to sugar content, although if anyone knows of anything I would be grateful if you could let me know!!
Thanks

...I'm sorry I can't comment on the diabetic questions...but as to conditioning I think it was Eddy Merckx who said "ride your bike, ride your bike, ride your bike"...all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...0

I got this book
http://www.amazon.com/Cyclists-Training ... 760&sr=8-3
its really really good. Not that its gospel or anything (it doesn't claim to be) but it gives good insight into the different type of training you can do to for the different type of rider you want to be.
I have found from experience though, that longer and faster tend not to go hand in hand. Its pretty much one or the other. If you train for TT you're likely to be more of a plodder when it comes to long distances, and vice versa. Its different muscle that are called into action depending on the type of riding you're doing (same goes for hill vs the flat).
Anyway, I recommend that book. It included everything from nutrition to training to just about everything really.0 -

I'd check out the complete guide to endurance training, very well written book and ideal for this sort of thing.0
