Quick question - are KMC joining links reusable?

I thought they were, but now I'm not so sure after having just gone to KMC's website and found that it doesn't suggest the chains I'm looking at (X9 range) when I select "reusable missing link" from the options in their chain finder.

So, are the missing links that come supplied with the X9 chains (X9.73 and X9.93 specifically) reusable or not?

If not then I might just stick with SRAM tbh.

  • Once I got the stupid joining pin on my KMC half-link chain into the chain I vowed never to take it out.

I just split them at the rivets and re-fasten with the same rivets, using a chain tool. My Park Tools book told me how...

I'm definitely sold on joining links, I love them. And I'm pretty happy with my current SRAM chain and powerlink. Just heard good things about KMC and thought of changing once this chain wears down but if the links aren't reusable then I won't.
  • I use X8 on my commuter and X9 on my MTB and the missing links are reusable on both. I'm about to get a road bike with 10-speed and am told that their X10 missing link is reusable too (unlike SRAM 10-speed poewerlinks) so I'll be using X10 on it once the OE chain needs replacing.

Also, what has happened to the price of chains? Bought 3 X9s for £30 from Merlin at the end of the summer; now they're £42 for 3!

Yeah, I had actually ordered an X9.73 from Chain reaction and it said it was in stock, then it never arrived and now it says out of stock and they don't know when they'll get any more.

Call me cynical but I suspect they've removed it from sale because the prices have gone up and they want a short break before re-introducing it at a higher price.

    EBay it is.

I've got both X9s and X10s. I was told by Merlin that the links are re-useable.

I reuse KMC missing links all the time: I take the chain off to clean it monthly and reuse the same links everytime unless I lose one
