I'm ready to buy my first set of spd's (very exciting!!!) for off road use.

I am think in of........ Shimano M540 pedals (they're only £40, I thought they'd be good to strat off with. Do people agree?)............

................ and womens spec shimano shoes WM40.

My question is............ do cleats come with the shoes when I buy them, or do I have to buy them separately?

Be great if someone could help me with my 'trivial' dilemma!!!!!!!

The cleats usually come with the pedals. You may care to try a pair of the SM-SH56 multiple release cleats until you get used to them.

A bit of tape or something on the handlebars is useful to remind you that you're 'clipped in'. Good luck
  • can't give you too much advice I'm afraid, but I can save you £12

  • great!! cheers blitz. I did look at those cleats and took a liking to them, will try!!!!

Don't know about the tape on the handlebars though!!!!!.............................A friend of mine once taped wellies to old ski's and broke her leg!!!!!!

Will look at the website mancunian.. cheers!

I'd go for the M520's for £17.99 at Merlin and spend more on shoes personally.

I have the M520's and can't fault them, don't think the M540's offer more to justify the price.

Being clipped in takes a bit of getting used to, and you will fall off [though you will be at a standstill, so it wont hurt too much!! ]. Slacken the tension right off though and you will find it very easy to 'eject'!

    Enjoy!

i've got the shimano m545's , they're bigger and chunkier but you can use them with flat shoes aswell.

don't know if that's any help to you :D
  • cheers for all the great advice, so you def get the cleats with the pedals?!!!

    does the M545 collect mud?

they do a bit, they don't get clogged full of the stuff but because of the cage that obviously attracts the brown stuff.

it all depends what type of riding you're gonna be doing aswell. i do mostly - i don't know what the phrase would be these days!! - maybe hardcore cross country/freeride so i like the feel of a big pedal there for stability.

I changed to clipless a few months ago and I know you'll LOVE the extra power! :D

I fell off endlessly on my first ride with them, but as bells says, you're usually barely moving, so it's more funny than painful. I started off with a bit less tension on the left pedal, which meant I could at least get one foot out a bit easier (and I naturally go for the left for whatever reason).
