Hi this is the second time i have posted this topic ( seeing as the first was mysteriously removed), I am getting a slx crankset and am exchanging it for the bog standard hollowtech II version, i think the slx has an external bottom brackett and my current one has an internal sealed unit.
What i would like to know is can i remove and fit the new slx by myself (i have the tools) and also as long as i do not touch the cassette or rear mech will i need to reset my gears after fitting the slx or not?
PLease help i am ok at diy on my bike but the crankset is one item i have never touched!
keep on trekking!!!!

My thoughts were that the bog standard HT2 crankset (I am thinking just the DEORE one here) is also an external BB, but maybe there is in internal BB type as well.
If you can get the old BB out, fitting the new external BB is easy....just follow the instructions for finding out about the spacer placement, and screw everything in.
Once the BB is in, attaching the crankset is easy peasy....again follow the instructions.
My opinion is that you will probably have to re-check the gears.......the rear will probably not need much (if anything), but if the chainline is different, then obviously this will affect it.
Why the want not to adjust the gears??? easy to follow instructions are available from parktools and this is something that is really useful to know how to do. Go for it.Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

Internal bb is more likely to be an octalink, if you have the tools its an easy job (provided you are fairly competent), just remember non drive side has traditional threads (lefty loosen/righty tighty) and drive side has opposite (righty loosen/lefty tighty), you may need to tweak the front mech on the new chainset but this should be a case of slightly adjust the h/l stops and tension the cable.0

It's unlikely the gears will work perfectly afterwards without some tweaking, but it's a 5 minute job to sort it out.0
