Advice please!

Good evening all.
I currently have a MTB and i am looking to buy a road bike for the summer to go out on early in the mornings before work, for general fitness and fun.
It wont be used for races or anything like that, but i want something half decent to last.
I am looking to spend between £300-£500 so can anyone suggest any goodbuys?
Halfords Carrera road bikes come up on the forum now and again, so are these any good as would i be right in thinking carrera's of old didnt used to be up to much or am i being a snob!?
Also my LBS stocks Giant roadies. Thoughts on these?
