roof rack/bike carrier
Morning,
Not sure if this is in the right forum, or if it has been done to death already (if so please post the link for the thread/s). I need either a roof rack or rear mounted carrier for transporting my bike to club runs. Id cycle there but on sunday mornings i need to use the car. I want either a roof rack (except im quite small and i imagine it would be a faff and a half getting the bike up there without scratching the car) or a rear mounted carrier for two bikes (in case i give anybody a lift home). Its a 5 door hatchback. Willing to spend up to £100 for something decent and stable and not a pain in the bum to get set up/take off.
Thank you,
Helen

do you have a tow bar ? If so have a look at tow bar mounted racks, If you want a rack for more than 1 bike, make sure you can fit the bike seperatley, or in other words they are not fastend togeather.0

Not sure what you mean by this, you mean the bikes fastened together or the rack and the bike fastened together?0 -
Helen, This was someting I gave a lot of thoughtto before deciding - and ultimately it was the need to carry my son's kayak that clinched it - a pair of Thule roof bars (not cheap, but you can get cheaper makes) and Thule bike carrier that has the bike vertical on the car roof. Each bike needs it's own roof mounted carrier, so it's not the cheap solution, but I think the best place for the bike(s) - most car roofs will take the weight of up to three bikes, some four, but do check the weight limit for your Corsa in your handbook. Friends that use tail gate type carriers appear inconvenienced, as getting into the rear of the car means taking the bike(s) off, and unless you use an additional light bar the bike(s) can conceal the cars rear lights and number plate, as well as block your view out of the back. Main thing to consider with a roof mounted rig is the entrance to many car parks is limited to 2 metres high vehicles, and your car with a bike on top will be around 3 metres, so you have to be on your guard when deciding on a car park. There'll be lots of people that favour each option, and you may want to consider also what you do if/when you change your car - is the rack you buy suitable for a different hatchback - or even a saloon (ie one with a boot)? Good luck.0

As you have no tow bar I would probably go for the roof bars, however what I meant was that some carriers have mounts for individual bikes so you can put 2 bikes on them and you know they will be far enough apart not to scratch each other. Cheaper options do not have this facility and whilst they are fine for just one bike, great care has to be taken when carrying 2 or more bikes as they will be resting on each other.

If you log on the above then you can see the difference with the boot mounted carriers0
