Has anyone used the Sat Map active 10 for mapping during an End to End ride. Is it recommended or what are the issues?

I think SatMap would be overkill for a LEJoG, assuming you are sticking to roads. Including mapping it's going to set you back £500 plus. For around £200 you can get a Garmin + mapping if you look around. I did my LEJoG with a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx and only took 2 wrong turns the whole way (and that was because I followed road signs rather than trusting the Garmin!).

SatMap is only really needed if you are going off road & using a lot of farm tracks or footpaths.

a serious case of small cogs

I do have a GPSmap 60csx thing with bike mounts and Topo GB. but I dont think the mapping is that good. I've used it mainly as just a bike computer to tell me distances speed etc but thats all. I will have to give it another look see.
