has anyone rode the Forest of Dean Trail recently? Was hoping to give it a go but didnt know what it is like, especially at this time of year?

  • I spent the day riding out of Parkend last week - awesome. Some trails were very muddy (the bottom half of Dowies esp) but that's not necessarily a bad thing! The Forest of Dean is a lot quieter at this time of year so it's a great to get out there.

I rode the red route at Cannop at the beginning of December, they have added some gravel to parts of it which usually get boggy in the wet, so its pretty good. In general the FOD isn't too bad for mud, its not gluey mud but is a bit gritty and can make your legs sore. The wild boar which appear to be digging up most of the area looking for roots to eat are causing quite a bit of mess, the mixture of grass and mud in these areas can clock up your wheels, try and steer clear of those areas.

PS - Dowies was named after a local rider called nicknamed "Dowy", I think he was/is a forest timber worker and built the route in his spare time, I used to ride with him. Bit of history for you there :D
