You've clearly never had anything to do with horseriding. You could fund an olympic cycle team for the upkeep of a typical horse.

I've switched focus from riding horses to riding bikes in the past year - I ride (rode) horses weekly (at a yard), plus a few hacks and weekends along the way. Cheaper than owning a horse by a lot, granted. I thought bikes would be cheaper but I spend a lot more now.

Most kit is comparable in cost for similar quality. One difference is that whereas most riders are content with just one horse, cyclists tend to require extra bikes and most have a runabout / commuter, MTB and road.

Core fitness is good to transfer, as is your 'seat' (i.e. your sense of balance). If you know bridleways then you know where the good routes are too! You should have a natural sense of looking ahead and track planning. I still use horse riding gloves, gilet, jacket if the weather is bad, despite having cycling ones too.

What I do miss is sitting on a heating system!

    Enjoy!

I suppose I'm biased, as I have kids who are learning to ride. If you ask me what horses eat, I'd have to speculate 'tenners'!
  • Thanks for all the good advice...up to now bikin is workin out cheaper than horse ridin...give me time though lol. Goin to Gwydyr forest this weekend try my luck there...at least i don't have to hook horse trailer up...just throw bike in back of car lol!![/quote]
  • I used to ride (in the Household Cavalry) as well. I enjoy not having to muck my bike out, clean its sheath, or get kicked/bitten/crushed in a stall. Plus my bike never trampled me after coming off :D

I certainly don't miss getting gassed every time I put on a tail bandage! The horror......

I'd say keep your new mount in the dry whenever you're not using it though, and ENJOY!!!
  • Thanks for that....its nice n dry in my garage. Love those big irish draughts, my farrier used to be in the Household Cavalry aswell
  • He must be minted then. I bet he could afford to buy loads of bike goodies!
  • Welcome to the forum in my opinion you have made a good change mtb rocks!

Wow, how freaky, as I was going to start a similar post. I too have just taken up riding mtb's although still have my horses.

Spurred on by crap weather, and a series of unfortunate events involving my neds over the winter, a bike seemed the only option and I love it!

Tomorrow, we plan to combine the two, providing the forecast snow doesn't actually happen, and take one bike and one horse to Delamere Forest tomorrow to do the white trail......handily the horseboc we have makes a cracking cycle carrier too!

First stop for me on the bike was a trip to the bike shop, as the seat that came with my Caldera absolutely battered my posterior

Anyway, enough of raiding your thread
  • rrrrrrrr,you're selling you're horse to buy a bike??

Thats like me swapping my dog for a skateboard or something
