Looking to upgrade wheelset on Specialised Allez. Shimano R550 look good value (ie cheap) - are they old/redundant models? Had also been looking at Shimano RS20's, Mavic Aksium, Fulcrum 5s...things in this kind of price range.
Any feedback on these models would be welcome.
Rides - commuting and longer rides on wintery, hilly, poor quality Scottish roads, training for Etape Caledonia in May.

    Hey.

I have an Allez Sport and I recently upgraded to some Easton EA50SL's. These are handbuilt and ride absolutely lovely, especially for the price!!!!

Worth checking out as I looked through the models you mentioned..

Re. the R550's - yes they're not a current model - however, they're a good budget pair of wheels (I prefered them over the RS20's, even though the RS20's were better built) - if I had to pick a pair from your list I'g go for the Racing 5 Evo's.

R550 won't make a great upgrade on your allez - they aren't that great really (which is why they're cheap!)

fulcrum 5s would make a good upgrade though - they can be had for around £150 - stick some good tyres on them and you would have a great upgrade for your allez!
  • thanks. I'll have a look at the Fulcrum 5s. Also seen a pair of mavic open pro/105 wheels that are meant to be great on our less than adequate roads...

I have open Pros and I have nothing else to compare them with other than the alexrims that came on my Allez but they are so much better. 1500 miles and I have never needed to put a spoke key anywhere near them.
