Introducing energy supplements

I've only ever used water and fruit as part of my training diet but this year I would like to challenge myself and increase the distances I ride and if possible, extend my overall ride-time.
With these two goals in mind, I have come to the assumption that fruit and water alone will not power my mind or my body for 7+ hours in the saddle.
Is this the time for me to consider adding energy supplements to the water I carry?
I know that no energy supplement will magically increase my overall fitness/performance so I am a little skeptical of the role these supplements play.
Could someone give me some advice as to where I should start, what I should look for and recommend any products.
Thank you.
