I have a 2004 GT avalanche and in planning on fitting a marzocchi XC 600 ATA2 fork to replace my marzocchi MZ comps ETA. i was wondering if these would be a good choice for the bike. Also im looking for a new headset, i think it has an internal one, i was wondering if that was the case and if so if anyone knows of any good headsets that i can consider.

Yes, I think it is an internal (not integrated). Easy way to check is to look at the headset cups: if not present, intergrated. If shallow cups, internal.

FSA Z headsets are good value internal headsets.

XC600 a decent fork, if a little weighty for the money. Tough though.
  • well i've found it for £220 so i save £110, would it be ok to keep at 100mm al the time? It doesn't have cups like on my orange patriot, instead i has bulges at the top and bottom that are 20mm deep both ends and the headtube is 130mm long if that helps.

No internal shallow cups? My 2004 avalanche did ;-)

The frame can be run upto 130ish, but does get slack.
  • I haven't looked inside, would my best bet be taking it to a bike shop? It said in one spec or my modle that it was a zerostack one. But what are internal shallow cups? What headset would i need? and how did it handle with 130mm of travel? i was planning on keeping the forks at 100m

The bulges are where the internal headset bits fit.

Internal is zerostack! It can be confusing!

I'd get the FSA Z as on CRC.

130mm is too relaxed for my liking, 100 is better.

have a look at the top and bottom of the head tube can you see flanges of the cups?

see pictures in the MTB FAQ´s.

  • Well i would like abit more travel at the mo but its lush to ride wit 105mm. i was just wondering if the XC600 will still be nice even at 100mm. I've look at the FSA Z and it looks gd thanks for the advice.

Yes, it will be fine at 100mm! It is what the frame is designed around.
  • well i was think more about if it would be ok for the fork to be kept at that travel. sorry for double posting. So it is internal headset then? Sorry its just that i want to be clear about this so i don't wast money for when i buy a new one.

Yes, I would leave it at 100mm all the time! If you get the travel adjust version you can tailor it to what you feel is best. But 100mm is what GT bbased the frame on.

I am 99.9% sure it is an internal. If in doubt put a picture up here of the headtube.
