I'm looking to get a freeride bike & I like the look of the Kona Stinky & the Orange Patriot,
my mate had a Stinky Deluxe & raved about it but i've heard nothing but praise for the Patriot.

Is the Patriot much lighter than the Stinky? + people say the Patriot pedals better?

Any help is much appreciated

Cheers

Andy

  • Orange aren't making the Patriot this year, you might want to look at the Blood or the Alpine 160. http://www.orangebikes.co.uk/2009bikes/bike.php?model_id=107
  • i would go with an orange kona's full suss' arent very strong
  • on the plus side the kona stinky is cheaper

    but get the stinky!!! :wink::wink:
  • Thanks for the replies fellas.

Found a 2004 stinky frame going dirt cheap, so i'm gonna biuld it up in the next couple of months.

I would say patriot, just being pretty bias! IMO patriot > stinky

The new 09 stinky air looks sweet and is loaded with saint bits and pieces. Shame it's about £4000

I don't know their strenght, but I've seen a lot of pictures with broken Konas in half, literaly.
    Oranges never.

But I'm sure that they're a lot stronger than my XC machine.
And bad riders break their frames. Or bad luck....

I'd look at an Iron Horse 6.4
  • i would go for the orange because it looks so much nicer and is way stronger

Ive got a patriot 66 and love it. Ive never looked back its a stunning bike easy to clean imediatly identified due to its unique engineering and proven geometry. plus its british and theres something pleasing about owning something born and bread here theres not much manufacturing left in this country so support your own!!!!! it feels good.

Just a quality product. different bike a bit eccentric hand made and you can get good customer support by the boys in halifax

  • I saw a new orange alpine 160 in a bike shop the other day, and nearly creamed myself, they are very nice. Also, consider a scott gambler or a marin quake.
  • wow that guy is brave, SPDs on that broken Kona, couldnt imagine using them it on a XC bike meself, let alone a DH bike

always liked the look of the patriot for what its worth, simple but strong. that said i have never ridden one...

I used to have a stinky, my mate had a patriot, although he was a lot smaller than me (I'm 6ft2"), so riding his was a waste of time for me as the sus was setup for a much smaller guy!

My stinky was a very nice bike when going downhill, but anything not downhill and you may aswell be riding a motocross bike without any petrol. Its a waste of time and a waste of effort. All your energy is soaked up by the springs and it does bounce a hell of a lot.

I sold my stinky because it annoyed the hell out of me riding anything that wasn't aided by gravity. However if you can put up with its poor pedalling then its a very good bike, it does take a bashing, but be careful because they can snap!!!

I'd definatley go for the patriot over the stinky though and I used to have one lol.... I'd say go for a hardtail freeride bike, I'm building one at the moment because the full sus is such a pain and very limited to riding it only off road and downhill.
  • i have had the stinky for last 4 years and i have no complints i think yhey are super strong
