Shimano chain quicklink

Hiya,

I've just received a new hg40 chain thru the post, to replace the same item which rusted beyond repair after just a week left caked in mud! (I know, I know, but my outside tap for the hose burst blah blah  ).

Anyway, I was under the impression that all shimano chains needed to be fitted with a joining pin, but this has come with some kind of quicklink.

Is this new? And more to the point, is it any good?

Are you sure it is a Shimano?

I was aware that Shimano were going to start having quick links on their 10spd chains, but hadn't heard that they had filtered down already to their mtb offerings. Some details on their Quick-Link here:

    http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/SI_0074A_001/SI-0074A-001_En_v1_m56577569830655402.pdf
  • Yeah its definitely shimano. The box it came in has 2 options on the front with tick boxes, one saying "connecting pin", the other "quicklink", and the latter is ticked on mine. No option to choose was given when I ordered, and haven't heard of this anywhere. First time I've changed the chain, guess I'll give it a go and see what happens!

Thanks for the link to those techdocs JasonRwmb, they seem a bit more thorough than the ones that came in the box.

Off to swinley forest on sunday to meet an mtb club I'm hoping to join, hope there's no chain "dramas"...

Crouching next to a bike with a broken chain in a howling gale while cold water runs down my neck I dont want to be mucking about with anything complicated
