Are brake adaptors universal? Or do you need to get a manufacturer- or even model-specific adaptor?

    for some brakes you do.

but generally they will work from anywhere are the fittings are standard.

Some state that they dont work with X and Y brake or fork.

Thanks very much- it's one of those things where you can see that logically, the dimensions should be standard but you never know if there'll be fouling issues, or another case of mtb "standards" Appreciate the help.

I've always avoided Avids because they allow space for the spherical washers that they use to help align them. Maybe the space allowance is in the caliper, maybe the adapter but I don't know which so I've avoided them.

the washers are part of the calliper.

Or they would have problems with the direct mount post mounts.
