is there a part of your bike you are particularly fond of?

I'm only really ever attached to my pedals.

  • Has to be the saddle.

Don't care how flash/costly your bike is without a saddle it'd be uncomfortable.

  • Dérailleurs.

Some of them (when new!) are an absolute work of art, and it pains me to ride on them.

Cyclocross levers on my pompino, make riding in traffic so much safer.

To look at, when not riding, I think the gear indicators on the current Tiagra STI levers are quite clever in a 'cute' sort of way.

This admiration stops when on the bike though, as they're actually rubbish.

I also quite like the almost-organic, slightly sculpted lines of the current Ultegra STI shifters. Only when viewed from the outside, mind. The sprouting cables when viewed from any other angle don't really help.

Taking inspiration from David's post below, when it comes to chainsets, I think there is little to rival the beautiful, ageless simplicity of old-pattern Campagnolo Record Pista. So very, very shiny, very, very narrow and very, very unobtainable. Managed to get a pair a couple of years ago, but they have yet to oust the Miche Primatos on my track bike.

+1 to that; I've got a couple of Mavic 840s acquired s/h. Lovely pieces of kit. Also really like the cranksets on my two best bikes, both UK-made and CNC'ed (one Middleburn, one L&M; the latter is the better finished of the two, sadly the firm is now defunct).

Campag downtube shifters on my second bike, when polished I can look at them for hours.
  • I particularly like the shape of my forks (Scott CR1 jobbies), best description I can give is 'swoopy'. There's probably no need for them to be that shape at all, but if they weren't I may well not have bought that bike!

The slight curve of the top tube. It just makes the bike look more graceful.

Or summat like that... It's kinda hard to explain!
