Hub Adjustment Query

I have tried Parks method for adjusting hub cones but no matter how little play I leave in the hub when its off the bike when in the bike I still get some play. Does any one here use parks method and had success.
Reason I am querying this method is I order a Deore m510 hub, I only needed the freehub but buying the hub worked out at roughly the same price as a freehub by its self, this way I get spares for no real extra cost. Any way I check the hub and there was no play in it, when I had the front wheel off my brother avalanche 3.0 disc I felt no play in the hub.
Or is it just Parks method needs a little play that's so small that you can't feel it buy hand.

the Park way is the way.
have a read of sheldons way as well."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I was told by an old hand in the way of spanering a bike that a little play would be taken up when you tighten the QR. Not really bothered doing it this way when I've needed to do the cones on my hubs just do the ritual of tightening, assembling QR etc, putting into frame only to find the cones are either too tight or too looseI've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

nicklouse in your opinion what would a small amount of play be? minimal to the point where you have to use a little force the move the axle to feel the play.0

cant in words.
it is when it is right when tightened."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Jedi, has the right question, being an inexperienced fiddler of the Park book school, having spent many Saturday nights with cup and cone when I should have had a life, I came to the conclusion that "a little play" was something I would never find and "just no play" would do.0

Park way all the way, just be careful when you lock the cones, that is the point when more play can be re-introducedScott Scale Custom

i've got to admit that when ever i have done mine i have tightened them up so that you can just feel them working as such when you tighten them up and spin them holding the axel, takes a bit of getting right and having the wheel so it spins freely and stops of its own accord rather than the have them too tight method, but is worth it in the end, nothing worse than getting it to what you think is right, thread lockign the lot putting it in and it being worse than before haha!
(this comes from someone who taught himself how to fix them after fear of looking stupid in the bike shop! but having a fair amount of car spanering knowledge)Timmo.

I've found it works best if you tighten the cones up to a point where they could do with loosening a little, tighten the locknut to the cone and then undo the cone to the locknut, not do the locknut upto he cone.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

yeah, if you dont have a set of axle vices, which I assume you dont, try leaving a bit of play in, the grab 2x17mm normal spanners and crank either end up. Usually works and your cones stay locked.
Id agree with an earlier poster and say leave no play on it too if its new, Ive only left say 1mm of play in hubs that are a bit worn and would otherwise feel crap when tightened up.
Have funyep, my letter 0 key is bust0
