Iced up cleats / pedals

I've quiet taken to riding in the recent ice and snow but I've got a problem that someone may be able to help with?

My spds ~(M424's) and cleats keep getting iced up - not just ice but a kind of mix of frozen mud / slush / snow. In warmer weather when they clog up with mud generally I give them I good blast from my water bottle but this doesnt work when it's so cold. Any ideas apart from going back to flats?

Try an SPD without the cage, less to hold the snow. M520s are cheap and nearly as good as the more expensive ones.

I've had occaisional problems with XT SPDs not engaging in the snow, usually just need a bit more welly.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
