What bike for ride from Casablanca to London

Hi,
I have been cycling ,most of my life (early forties) but never on organised rides or races.
I am orgainising a charity event to cycle 100 miles from Casablance (Morroco) to London via France. I need to buy a bike for the ride that will be comfortable and light. I have £1300 to spend on it and am leaning towards second hand as I'll get more for my money.
Any suggestions on what to buy and what not buy?
