Speaking of hubs... what's the company called that begins with an R and makes wheels?

You poor misguided thing. You will have both the time and money. It's just that you'll have to hide things at home, or have them delivered to work, and generally lie: "No, that's not new, I've had it ages", and "I can't remember how much it was. I don't think it was much though. I got it from ebay".

Like the rest of us.

Got a Rolf on my Jetstream (did have one on the back as well, that went on eBay when I got a SRAM DualDrive hub put on). Splendid bit of kit, looks dainty but strong with it.

I try to work the same way with my bike as I do with the cars. Keep things in line and only aim for what would be an improvement in an area it's genuinely lacking.

Just as I wouldn't fit an airscoop without an intercooler underneath, I'm not putting a £50 chain on a deore chainset.

OK OK! The carbon stem was the only one hanging around that was the right length! AND I found the vented bonnet very cheaply

I was thinking about this today as I contemplated upgrading the bottom bracket.

Another two reasons for upgrading a cheap bike (£350) as oppose to a relatively expensive bike (£1000+):

    (i) Almost everything on the bike apart from the shifters, front and rear mech are stock standard. This means that almost everything bought seperately (like hubs) is going to be an improvement.

(ii) Upgrades for a £350 bike (without going crazy) and the bike itself is affordably within my modest monthly disposable income. I don't have to save or commit to interest free credit (not that there is anything wrong with that) in order to purchase parts.

For me upgrading an SCR and fitting Fulcrum Racing 7's, is more financially viable than buying a £1,500 - £2000 bike and fitting Fulcrum Racing 3's.

Also part of the joy is actually fitting the upgrades myself.

Just don't upgrade the bike too far. Putting £400 wheels on a £350 bike for instance...

My rule when buying bikes is get the best frame you can afford and then upgrade as/when you want/need/can afford.

Yep it is... Take this from Wiggle for instance:

    Deposit £225.00. APR 19.9%.

    @DDD

Your logical progression to date has been as follows

Should I upgrade my Road Bike?
    What should I upgrade next?
Am I wrong to want a new bike to get me up a hill?
If I were to buy a new bike which frame type should I get?
Sure there's nothing wrong with interest free credit.*

Can we just cut out the rest of the debate and get straight to the part were we decide what your budget is and which bike you are going to buy?

I suggest a binding poll will be a fair and democratic way of sorting this out.

*You may disagree which this analysis, however you are already thinking about how you will upgrade your £2k bike. I think you just need a push in the right direction.

EDIT As I have been credit crunched and have no job I have decided to realise my road bike buying fantasies through you. Sorry about that

To clarify, I don't want a new bike to get me up a hill. I want a new bike that bling's because it looks nice and so I toy with more seriousness the idea of taking part in a sportive or long distance ride - physically I have some way to go though.

Here's where I become difficult, feel free to flame me and my logic....

Spending money on a new bike won't be as simple as it would have been last year. I don't want to stay in my job another 12 months so wont be taking up the cyclescheme (this would be the easiest way - However, I don't want to say too much but there are ways around this and if my job does 'do' another cycle scheme at the right time.... today's choice would be a Cannondale Synapse Carbon 105 £1,400).

I'm reluctant to spend that amount of money up front (all in one go in cash) or commit to anything over a 12 month period just in case I lose my job.... " Wolves have chased me to the edge of a cliff and I'm too afraid to jump..."

if you buy all these nice components for your older frame that's fine as long as the plan is to buy a new sweet as frame and then ship them across... then you have yourself a fine bit of kit

Sorry if its been mentioned already but it's only just occurred to me and I couldn't be bothered scrolling back

Do you really want to risk upgrading you commuter if it can't be stored securely? Did you not have a saddle stolen recently?

Very valid point. My replacement saddle has a gap in the center which I run a cable through and tie to my D-lock, then I secure the frame with another lock. Both the main locks lock the wheel, frame to a post.

I keep my bike indoors when I'm at home and at my parents house (where my Giant M2 is) its all pretty secure there.

But most importantly if the bike was stolen I'd be astronomically pissed. But all the upgrades (and the planned upgrades) I can afford on a month by month basis.

    Also insured.
