I have only popped my spoke once since i bought the bike in May 2008, i was just wondering how often roughly you guys pop it?. The bike shop repaired it for me for free but they said it happens to every (road) bike so next time they will charge.

    And this is what exactly to do with the title "Race?"

    does it matter?

    Once, in 20-odd years of riding, FWIW.

    I popped a spoke in the last "race" I did... During the Tour of Lombardy granfondo just before the climb to Ghisallo... The worst thing is that I was riding a new pair of Bora Ultra's. So I was pretty peeved. After the snap I couldnt ride the wheel and had to wait for a spare... race over :-(

    I popped a spoke in the TdU challenge ride a couple of years ago. Just finished coming down a hill into Yankalilla, doing upwards of 70 km/h.

    A couple minutes later on an ascent, a rear wheel spoke 'popped' out sideways, cut my leg (only a scratch), wacked into my seat stay, scared the crap out of me and I proceeded to fall in front of hundreds of people waiting for the real race.

    I was so peeved. Still had 20 kms to go; was only a cheap pair of mavics, so I released the rear brake and rode the rest of the way to the finish.

    Wheel stuffed by time I made it - but hey I made it.

    Actually it was a race for those in compound 1 - Italian elites... Cant fix a Bora on the side of the road, in case you dont know its a carbon wheel and has concealed nipples.

    It really sucked... no matter how hard I pulled at the rim I couldnt get it straighter.. The clearance with the frame is tiny (less than 1 cm each side of the rim), so zero hope of getting a bent wheel going. When the spoke snapped I skidded about 20m to a halt... What a bummer... Never popped a spoke before.

    :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: hahhaa damn right...

    BUT BUT BUT the coolest thing in my life then happened...... a big group came along with a mavic neutral car and I got a wheel... just like on TV... I chased like a lunatic to get back on and then was promptly spat out the back as the road went up.. Then the second coolest thing happened... two red skoda official cars with the commissaires were following... Just for a moment it felt like I was a pro hahaha

    For anybody who is race fit, I highly recommend you sign up for this granfondo - be early signing up and you will stand a good chance of getting into compound 1 at the start line. That group has all the "pro frills" i.e. mavic neutral support cars, police outriders etc etc freakin cool
