Just that

Makes for good reading about should we be allowed to go through red lights.

Care to give a precis of the content? We don't get the Metro out here but I'd be interested in seeing the arguments for, speaking as someone who openly admits to RLJing out here in Sticksville (when no-one's around and it's safe to do it...)

Some people say ( cyclists) that they do it as they dont feel safe at lights as they might get hit or a driver going through a red light.

Others against are almost being hit on light crossings or cyclists zooming in front or behind them

Both have good arguments as I dont like sitting at lights, I work in motor claims, I see tons of claims for rear end collision and traffic light collisions.

But I do see cyclists almost hit people, including me this morning when I was walking on the pavement, as had to take the car this morning as my chain snapped.

I can see points from both sides, and it will continue to be an argument, and dont think it will get resolved.

(How many cars do you see in the cycle boxes, or riding right in the cycle lane, or they park in the cycle lane and we have to swerve into traffic, they dont make it easy for us)

Problem is that, whatever we may argue about there being "safe" times to RLJ, there are very obviously UNsafe times to RLJ and enough cyclists already seem not to care, yes, Mr Rapha-cap and ninja roadie who RLJed across Regent Street when a couple of dozen people were ready to cross, you d!ck. Legalising any kind of RLJing will give carte blanche to the dumb or reckless to blast through red lights when it's lunacy to do so.
  • indeed one only has too look at busy shared paths and junctions to see that some will just barge though.

the sheer amount of lights is a pain though far less on bike than any other form of transport i find.

I think when its not a junction just a crossing and it is clear (like a Zebra) it should be OK for a cyclists to RLJ. Why? I find this is where motorists accelerate (normally less space to move than a juction) the most when the lights go green. There is also no possiblity of vehicles coming from the left or right. You can physically see on the approach if someone is on, approaching or running to the lights intent on crossing it.

I think its stupid RLJing at junctions especially busy complex junctions.

A true scalp is not only overtaking someone but leaving them stopped at a set of lights. As you, who have clearly beaten the lights, pummels nothing but the open air ahead. ~ 'DondaddyD'. Player of the Unspoken Game

Or do as I have done in the past and cheat! If I know the lights well and they have just changed red I will sometimes get off and walk around, then get back on and ride off. Much safer than riding through a red, even on a toucan where a jogger may appear (has happened on one I know)

I'm glad someone posted a thread about RLJing. You just don't see enough of them!

I got to admit, I am late for work sometimes, got two babies and no sleep.

I have done it, yes motorists are pissed.

I own a car so I can see both sides, but to be honest.... I don't care its the guy on the bike that will get killed, not the car driver.

I think it should be down to the cyclist to make the best judgment.

I think motorists are jealous, ...... God he is going to get there faster than me.....

I will show him, as they pass less than 12 inches from your handlebars.

I had a cabbie overtake me..... are you ready ........ In a bus lane, Single lane and there were cars lining up beside him, he came so close to making my children fatherless.

They think we are some kind of monsters, I have kids, they love me and I them, and I would die for them, but to put someone's life at risk because you cant be bothered to wait 2 seconds to let me pass, or you want to take your own life to run that red light then that's your prerogative. Cyclists and motorists this applies to.

Just use you common sense, you will either be late for work or you will be dead for work.

And motorists, I either will make it to my destination 2.5 seconds later because of that damn cyclist, or realize in court when you see my two babies and my wife, that someone loved me and I am a person just like you.

God that was sappy, but people in cars over here are so aggressive and there is no need.

You admit to pissing off motorists because your darling children make you late for work, and then berate everyone else for being in a rush. Does that not seem slightly hypocritical?

When you say walk around, do you mean lights at a junction or if the road simply bends?

If the road bends to a degree that I can't see the road ahead and there are lights that are red, I will stop. Only time I RLJ is if the road is straight or I can see clearly up the road and the pavement and its not a junction.

Also, it would have to be one covert-ninja-looking-jogger for me not to see them approaching a crossing. I slow for crossings while in RLJ mode in any case.
