Went out for a quick blast today (just a dozen miles) as I'd installed a new rear brake, new cables and bar tape and wanted to check I hadn't made an arse of it.
Anyway, on the way back, having crested a hill, I'd just shifted up the big ring (53t on Allez, my legs aren't that bad!) when an idiotic chav on the pavement looked back, saw me, and pushed his mate out into my path. For me anyway, I was fairly travelling, I pushed a pointed elbow in his direction and stopped him falling into me though I either caught him with the left pedal or the seat stay.
Needless to say I slammed on the anchors, dismounted and challenged the little cap-wearing c**t who pushed him. He seemed up for it until I drew my Topeak Master Blaster from the back of my jersey and turned it into a baton. He instantly lost his strut and I had him begging for forgiveness and squealing like a pig.
I'm not a violent person by nature. I've just turned 26 and I’m fairly proud to say my last “proper” fight was in junior school. I was however bloody furious and really had to fight to constrain myself from knee-capping this idiot. His three so-called friends (including the one he'd tried to injure/kill) scarpered but there were people on the opposite pavement out for I guess a Sunday stroll.
If I’d whacked him I guess I’d of been up for assault or ABH. Although I put the fear of god into him I’m guessing there’s nothing he could’ve been charged with, no? His “mate” obviously wouldn’t have pressed charges.
Should I've contacted the Police and/or rounded up witnesses?
I’m just grateful, as should the pr!ck be, that I wasn’t on my Wilier otherwise I’d of probably put him in hospital and happily served any sentence coming my way.

I think you did enough. You put the wind up the little sh1t without causing yourself any more hassle than neccessary, and he'll think ( er....well as far as his brain cell will allow) before doing it again. Getting plod involved will probably be of little effect, as they will be limited as to how far they can take things. Take satisfaction from a the way you restrained yourself.
Also, think that next time they might be tooled up......This is not 'Nam, Smokey. This is bowling. There are rules.0 -

I would like to think if there is anything going on in his head, in reflection he might feel both he and his mate got off lightly i.e. a) I didn’t lay into him and b) I didn’t seriously injure or even kill his friend.0 -
The way the law is right now, i dont think it was a good idea BUT I think you did the right thing as I dont think he will be doing that any time soon if at all again.
Plus he could have hurt you and his friend or the next person he did it to :shock:0 -

They're clearly not doing their bit to prop up the economy, seeing as I read in this morning's news that another 300 redundancies are on the cards at Burberry [1].

I would have thought threatening behaviour with a weapon would be treated in much the same way but named differently. I think I have seen in other threads that you are a serving police officer17 Stone down to 12.5 now raring to get back on the bike!0 -

firstly I was referring to specific mention of "breach of the peace". I am not commenting on other possible offences
Secondly, I am not and never have been a police officer. I apologise to all the police officers on here for your name being so sullied as being associated with me. :twisted:Want to know the Spen666 behind the posts?

Happens all the time.. just last night I was travelling a speed down long hill in torrential rain.
Despite having hi-viz and 900 lumen front light burning some total idiot decided to run across my path last minute to his mates who all found it hilarious when I almost hit him as I skidded and nearly wiped out.
Total *havscum0 -
Most little oiks are cowards, that goes for on foot, in car or on bike. There has it seems been an increase in those that carry weapons and knife crime. If you ever got into trouble just tell the police officer that you thought he had a knife (just as you do with burglars)*
Mind you I find it hilarious that anyone thinks Spen was a copper! He's too bright for that.

He got a rise outa you so he achieved what he wanted. And, unfortunately, i'd venture people who do that are quite used to receiving abuse so i doubt it had much of an effect. They probably thought it was hilarious afterwards that some bloke in lyrca had a go at them with a bike pump. By rising to the challenge you just gave them more reasons to behave badly towards cyclists, however justified you think getting rabid angry is.Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. Sorry but I dont agree with the above as I think it is one of the reasons this sort of thing happens.
When I was younger ( not that old at 41), we would not have done something like that because we knew that we would have got a slap at else for it, we also had more respect for people a round us and if you did not, it would be shown to you.
People are now not standing up to this sort of thing ( I understand about knife crime ), but it would have been more than one standing up to it.
I do understand what you are saying but you can also say that if the op did nothing, he would think to do it again and get away with it.
Its not so cut and dry as you seem to put it.0 -
A mini-pump can indeed be easily converted into a pretty good weapon! However, why does it seem that there are a lot more little sh*ts around than when I was younger and im only 21! Cleansing is required, but sadly scum breeds more scum.0

. Someone's angry! Just relax! It just sounds like you are looking for something to argue about or get angry about! I know, I used to be one myself.
Maybe when you get in a rage and see red, rather than hobbling on cleats, in lyrca, wielding a bike pump, (can you not see the funny side?!?! ), maybe just stamp on your pedals for the next 5 minutes? Turn that agression into cycling fast. Ride the adrenaline wave and reap the rewards when you climb off and see that your average speed is up.
What do you achieve by having a go at him? I think you're fooling yourself if you think you've somehow stopped him pissing cyclists off.
Or does the thought of that get you more angry? 8)Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.0 -

I appreciate from your previous posts that you’ve been on the sh!tty end of the stick - of essentially vigilante action - when it comes to bike vs. pedestrian or bike vs. motor vehicle. Perhaps I'd think differently if/when I've been on the receiving end.0 -

Well done to you Lagavulin, a sterling effort by any means.
I had similar idiots (I saw them about 50m away as I approached) kicking a ball across a street. They clearly registered my approach, and as I drew level, kicked the football across my path. I rode over the football, nearly lost my balance, but managed to maintain forward momentum, turned my head and swore at them.
This sort of behaviour, if left unchallenged, will not stop, as they think they'll just get away with doing what ever they please. I wish I'd dismounted to give said chavs a scare, mini-pump drawn from its scabbard. People will eventually get tired of standing aside for vagabonds and scallywags doing as they please.
